LESSON 3 OF 3
Year 8 · Digital Technologies

Internet Connections

Computer data includes numbers, text, images, documents and sounds. To move data from one place to another, it is encoded and sent as electrical signals through wires or as radio waves in wireless connections. Attempt every question, then assess your results at the bottom of the page.

Before you start: every question on this page must be attempted before the Assess button at the bottom unlocks. The progress bar shows how many questions you have left.

Signal Transmission

The laptop in the diagram below is connected to the internet using three different methods. Two of these connections use a cable broadband service (one via Wi-Fi and the other via an ethernet cable). The last connection uses a mobile network.

Note: if you set things up like this at home, your laptop would select and use only one of the internet connections at any time.

a. Label the diagram

Drag the correct word onto each numbered label. Read the speed hints on the diagram carefully — you will need them for the next questions.

b. Fastest and slowest

From the information given, which type of connection is usually the fastest?

Which is probably the slowest? (Although mobile networks are speeding up rapidly.)

c. Data transfer costs

Which two connections would have the same data transfer costs? (Tick exactly two.)

Think about which connections use the same supplier and transfer method.

Securing Your Data over the Networks

The issue with using any type of network is that you are:

  1. Sending data out into the world where anyone can steal it;
  2. Receiving data from the world, which may be damaging;
  3. Giving people a direct line of access to the data on your computer (known as hacking).

All these problems need to be solved so that your data remains secure and private.

Drag each piece of advice into the correct column. You should be able to work out the correct answers from the information given, but use the internet if you need help.

Security advice Turn on Wi-Fi and email encryption so that your data can't be read Use antivirus software to check the emails and files you receive Use a firewall to block entry to your network Only enter data into secure web pages Only download files and apps from reputable websites and stores Use strong passwords so that people can't hack into your network Share files through secure services such as Dropbox Don't open suspicious email attachments Be careful who you share your home Wi-Fi details with
